Side Effects of Kybella®

Kybella® is a safe and FDA-approved treatment, but like any injectable, it comes with potential side effects. Most are temporary and part of the natural fat-dissolving process.

• Swelling – The most common side effect, typically lasting a few days to a week (can be longer for some).
• Redness & Bruising – Mild to moderate, especially around injection sites.
• Tenderness or Pain – A dull ache or soreness in the treated area.
• Numbness – Temporary loss of sensation under the chin, which fades over time.
• Firmness or Lumps – Small, temporary bumps as the fat breaks down and is naturally eliminated.

You May NOT Be a Candidate for Kybella® If You: 

• Have Loose or Sagging Skin – Kybella targets fat, not skin laxity. If skin tightening is needed, alternative treatments may be better.
• Are Pregnant or Breastfeeding – The safety of Kybella during pregnancy or lactation hasn’t been studied, so it’s not recommended.
• Have an Active Infection or Skin Condition – Any open wounds, infections, or irritation in the treatment area need to be fully healed first.
• Have a History of Difficulty Swallowing (Dysphagia) – Kybella may cause temporary swelling, which could worsen pre-existing swallowing issues.
• Have Had Prior Neck or Jaw Surgery – Scar tissue or changes from past procedures might affect how Kybella works for you.
• Have Certain Medical Conditions – Neuromuscular disorders or other underlying health concerns may impact your ability to safely receive injections.

How Often Do You Need Kybella® Treatments?

Kybella® isn’t a one-and-done treatment—it works gradually to break down fat cells over time for a smooth, natural-looking result. Here’s what you need to know about retreatment:

Typical Treatment Timeline:

Sessions are spaced 4–6 weeks apart to allow your body time to process and eliminate fat cells.
Most clients need 2–4 treatments for optimal results.
Some may require up to 6 sessions, depending on the amount of fat in the area.

When Should You Retreat?

Your provider will assess your progress after each session. If you still have submental fat, additional treatments may be recommended. Once you reach your desired result, no further treatments are needed—Kybella® permanently destroys fat cells!
